Do you need some tips for taking care of a walnut dining table? A walnut table is considered to be one of the most beautiful and luxurious. However, it is easy to damage walnut wood especially if it is used as a dining table. A walnut dining set may easily scratch as tableware is placed over the tabletop. Hot plates and wet glasses can also damage walnut finishes and leave stains and scratches that could be close to impossible to remove. Here are some tips on how to care for this kind of dining room table:

Always use placemats, coasters and thick tablecloths to protect walnut sets. Hot items could melt the finish while wet ones could create hard to remove rings over the surface of the table. Regularly dust the surface of your walnut dining table. Use a microfiber cloth when dusting. Lightly touch the surface and do not forcibly rub the surface. If there are centerpieces over your table, lift them away before you polish; don’s just shove this away.

In case of accidental spills, wipe this immediately. Remove sticky spills with a damp cloth or sponge and then wipe with a dry and clean cloth. If a spill or water marks have been overlooked, this could be very hard to remove indeed! You will need to use a cheesecloth wet with hot water. Wring the cloth and then make a pad; place a few drops of ammonia on the blemish and then rub this briskly on the area until the unsightly marks disappear. Afterwards, place a generous amount of polish such as linseed oil and buff this with a clean dry cloth until the spot shines.

Since hardwood dining tables are very easy to scratch, apply a layer of furniture wax or polish on the surface at least two to three times a year. If a walnut table has a polyurethane varnish, do not apply wax anymore since this will only cause build-up of wax. There are times when a layer of oil accumulates along the surface and creates an icky oily feel. You can remove this by applying linseed oil on the surface and then rubbing it to remove the excess.

Treat your walnut dining table with care and it is a guarantee that you will be able to preserve the beauty and the strength of this type of table. With efficient maintenance, your walnut table will certainly stand the test of time.
